What is the best freshwater aquarium filter?

I just bought a 75 gallon aquarium to house my three cichlids. I have a convict, blood parrot, and a convict/blood parrot that are currently living in a 20 gallon. I was just wondering what filter would be the best for me to use. I will probably get either a power filter or a canister filter. Any opinions would be greatly appreciated. I don’t want to buy an expensive filter just to find out that it doesn’t do a good job. Thanks for any advice.

For power filters I’d get two AquaClear 110′s.

    For canister I’d get a Rena XP3 or 4.

My personal favorites for power filters are either the Penguin 350 by Marineland or the Aquaclear 110.

If it is within budget though, I actually like canister filters better than power filters. So far of the 4 canisters I have, all being eheim canisters, my favorite is the Eheim Professionel 3e. My boyfriend has a fluval 405, and it’s not bad either… I just like the way eheims are built. Very sturdy, good quality stuff, and they run very efficiently so long as you maintain them well.

I’ve used Marineland Magnum350 canister/ Penguin 330/350 power filters / Fluval 404 canister on tanks as large as 60 Gal ,, two of the Penguin 330/350′ s also works well ,,, plenty of water movement ,,,one or two Emperor 400 would also be a terrific combination,,, maintenance is easy ,, spare parts can be gotten if needed,,, they all run very quiet and reliable 24/7 for years,,, also I’m running a UGF- air driven with a Magnum350 on a 55 Gal austrailian rainbow tank with a high population,,,,9 rainbows 3″ long === 7 tiger barbs at 1-1.5 ” 4 BN pleco 2-3″ and one gold nugget pleco,,, one cory cat= 1.5″,,,,,, do your routine water changes and any of the filters will do a fine job,,,,, regards,,,,Jim

You should get a power filter for cichlids. They appreciate a gentle current, and they would like some movement in the water. The three types of cichlids you got should cross-breed fast. I am sitting here holding a 254-page book packed with information about tropical fish. If you’d like some information from this book, email me at greensmy@yahoo.com ;)
