You have to start a new word with the same kana character as the last one. You can play it in English too, but you have to use the last three letters of the previous word, because English syllables are longer than Japanese ones.

It’s usually the last two letters. As an example, Shiritori consists of 4 kana: shi, ri, to, and ri. But yeah, you’re more or less right.
