Is it legal to sell pet medication that you animal won’t take?

I recently got an Rx for a pain medication for my dog. It did not sit well with his system so he only took 2 or 3 of the tablets. I still have almost a 30 day supply and they are quite expensive. Was hoping I could save someone some money by passing them along.

    i guess so

That depends entirely on the medicine as to whether or not it is legal… what was it? It’s probably not a good idea to sell it though, I’m sure your vet wouldn’t approve… and it won’t be easy to find a buyer unless it is someone you know.

To everyone who said yes, some pet medications are controlled substances and you would get into the same trouble as if you were selling oxycontin or similar opioids to humans.

If you can tell me what it is I’ll tell you if it’s controlled or if it can be sold…

  4. Conservative Texan says:

    No. it’s a controlled substance.

  5. chulapreciosa says:

I guess, but I’m not sure, you must ask a professional

  6. Jez says:

you should make your dog take it…he would benefit most if he used it. mix it in with his food

  7. Stars-Moon-Sun says:

Yes very illegal, same as it would be to sell a humans medication. You can spend some BIG time for it if you get caught.

  8. single mom says:

Do what you have to do! Just don”t tell everyone what you are doing!!!

    yah probably

u can sell it. but how do u know it wont hurt the other dog? meds are based on dogs weight. also, how many dogs really need pain meds? only 1 i know for animals that really sells is street name(SPECIAL K) medical name for perscription.(KETAMINE-) .

  11. otherworldtrader@yahoo.com says:

It’s not illegal to sell your pet medicine. If you wish you can sell your own medicine as far as I know if you paid for it. you can’t subscribe any or write perscription but you can sell what is yours

  12. bme79 says:

No, it’s not legal. You could be charged with distribution of a controlled substance. Even though it’s for a dog, it’s still a prescription pain medication. I’d be careful if I were you.

  13. leftygirl_75 says:

your vet won’t give a credit on your account for the unused portion? I would not try and sell it to someone. If you got it from your vet then it is a prescription and if someone buys it from you and isn’t sure what it is for they could kill their dog or make them very ill.

  14. K C says:

Im not sure about pain meds, I know you can sell some of the others though, but I highly suggest donating them to a shelter…a lot of them will take the meds because they are in great demand and get expensive. There are also places that will help homeless people take care of their pets and they will take the meds too.

If it uis a prescription drug, then yes it is illegal to sell them. Besides, how will you save someone some money if you SELL them the drugs?
