Kimberley they are mating ….But seeing them mate does not mean eggs. Budgies enjoy sexual activity without producing eggs. Birds dont have pregnancies like some people think, and eggs will only be formed if there is somewhere the bird thinks she can lay eggs and raise babies. If you want them to breed and have babies you must repare. They mustr be over 12 months and in females under 4 years. If they arent do not encourage breeding by adding a nestbox. If they are of age and you want to breed you can add a nestbox. But they need to be eating a full and varied diet in preparation for raising a family….Fruits and vegies with more emphasis on the vegies. Calium additives ( do not think that a cuttlebone is enough becuase its more of a toy to destroy than something they eat ) so you have to have a couple of kinds of calcium….Liquid calcium in their water a few days a week, calcium/mineral block, etc.
The cage has to be large, big enough for a whole family of 7 or 8 birds, as the babies when they come out need space.
All this is assuming they are old enough and you may want to proceed. If not, take out all large food dishes in case your female thinks they are a great place to lay eggs, do not have nesting materials in the cage like paper in the bottom of the cage, and take the opportunity to rearrange the cage and shuffle the toys about.
This is breeding behavior, and it is perfectly normal! Congratulations, your birdies figured out the birds and the bees!
If they are at least 1 year old, you can get them a nestbox and let them have babies. They usually won’t lay until you give them a box, but some very persistent females will lay on the floor of the cage – if this happens, boil the eggs (I know, sorry) and give them back to her so she won’t lay replacement eggs. But still, no nestbox! You need to make them wait until age 1 year before raising babies, or it’s too hard on their bodies, and your mama can die.
So, you don’t really need to anything… Adding a nestbox will encourage breeding. Just let them do their thing – it makes them happy!
If you do want to let them have babies, read this article all the way down to ‘color mutuations’ first before making the decision to add a nestbox. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Budgerigar#Aviculture
Make sure you are comfortable with the requirements and responsibilities. If not, that’s ok! They get plenty of enjoyment feeding each other and more that they probably enjoy more than actually raising the babies, so don’t feel bad. The fact that they are exhibiting that breeding behavior means that they are happy.
