I have used them for many years now, and the e-collar in the hands of someone that has been taught how to use one is a fantastic tool, but in the hands of someone that doesn’t know how it is used is an absolute disaster.
The e-collar is absolutely nothing other than a one mile long leash, and is used exactly the same as any other leash.
When the e-collar is properlly adjusted it’s correction should feel exactlly like the correction made with the dog normal training collar. Otherwise one or the other will be without meaning to the dog. I always adjust the e-collar on my own arm before putting it on a dog.

Try it on yourself first. If it makes you obedient, then it may work on the dog. Be sure the batteries are well charges.

I own a beagle-mix, and the self containment system and remote control has been my best friend ever since we installed it. At first it seems like you are being cruel when you are initially training your dog, but once the borders are learned you need not to worry about you pup while they are outside making potty or playing.
As for the remote, I take this with me anytime I go anywhere that I feel comfortable leaving my dog run. Your dog will learn after a few corrections and will stay close to you.
I personally love this system, and I would highly recommend it to anyone that has a yard or loves taking their dog with them while they explore the outdoors.

My dad used one to help train his dog and it worked great! The remote had both tone and shock, he used the tone. When the dog came to stay with me and my lab (parents were on vacation) I had to use the collar at times, and as soon as I put it on her, she would settle down. My husband was curious about the shock, so he tested it on himself…. ! There were three different levels and the third (highest) almost brought him to his knees! I can’t imagine what it would do to a 20 pound dog.
