My elderly feline friend passed away this fall. He was hyperthyroid, and on tapazole chewtabs to regulate the thyroid. I still have quite a bit of medication, and would like to donate it to a shelter or rescue. However, I can’t seem to find any that will get back to me about whether they accept medication donations. I just don’t want it to go to waste if it can help another animal (especially since the cost was $1/pill and pet supplied are already so expensive).
So, does anyone know of any animal hospitals or shelters, etc in central NJ or NYC that definitely take donations of unused medication???

Your best bet is to just call around. Ask if they take unused medication, and then explain how you have it (they might be weary of giving you a straight answer otherwise).
You might check to see if your vet will take it back and dispense it to a low-income individual free of charge. That’s what my vet does with returned medications, either due to death of a pet or a medication that didn’t work out for the pet. They know which customers might be having financial difficulties and may be in need of that particular medication.
