Do Not Give Your Pets OVER THE COUNTER MEDICATIONS?

By crittercare in General Pet Care on November 23rd, 2009

This is more of a statement then a question….. My Cat was sick with a bad tooth and so I figured for the pain I would give her a Extra Strength Tylenol till i got her to the Vet the next morning…. Well the next morning I got up and went to take her to the vet and she was as limp as a noodle. I had poisoined her. Tylenol is leathel to cats. Thankfully I got her to the vet and she was able to be saved. I learned I would never treat my animals ever again. After all would I want a foot doctor to drill my teeth?Do Not treat Your own Pets.

  1. Good on you for spreading the word.
    Sorry about your cat.

Yeah animal physiology is way different. I’ve heard ibuprofen (Advil) is deadly to dogs, but I did not know Tylenol was bad for cats. Thanks for the heads up.

  3. I have only ever given my dogs half a baby aspirin. I treat my livestock myself all the time also, but I only use drugs labeled for the animals or extra label use drugs from the vet.

  4. Thanks for posting this.
OTC drugs are harmful to all pets.
In one way or another. The sad part is that there are Vets who actually tell people to give it to their pets.

Glad that she’s okay. Please take care. I am a registered nurse and you would not believe the amount of questions I get asked about health issues even with pets.

  6. yeah i heard that tylenol can kill a cat, there are pet medication.

  7. one thing my vet told me was ok was mycatracin on cat cuts etc, and ive used a ton of it over the years with success. other than that , no

If you were sick would you take medicine prescribed for an animal? YOU probably would. I hope you don`t have any children.

  9. glad the cat is o.k. thanx for the info

a lot of people don’t realise that a lot of vetenarian medicine is the same that we take. But everthing needs to be done by the vet so we know what is o.k. and what isn’t.

  10. There is some OTC drugs you can give your pets, but always check with you Vet first. Not only is Tylenol bad, but so is aspirin.

  11. My vet told me to use children benadryl for my dog’s allergies. I hope that is okay to use.

i’d never give people pain-killers, etc to my cats, but I do use antiseptic cream & hydrogen peroxide antiseptic on them with good results.

  13. Samantha, Thankyou for your encouragement. I think people believe that if you are a pastors wife you are impervious or the opposite a personal punching bag. I just wanted to send my question out into the world for thought. this is my husbands first senior pastorate. No I can’t play the piano. Thats the other commonly asked question. I am so disheartened by the lack of personal concern and well being spiritually that people seem to have. I wish there was some magic word that I could make them see all the glory of God. I spend my days counciling the congregation and the masses. Who councils the councilors. You are a blessing. Many thanks and prayers to you. Mrs. Tina Woodworth Four Rivers Church of God Oregon

  14. Thank you for sharing this. I am always telling people not to give their pets human meds without the vet telling them it’s okay and the dosage. Human meds can kill pets as you well found out. I am very thankful your cat was saved and that you know know not to play vet. Same thing with a lot of people foods. I cringe when I read” i give my cat (or dog) such and so and it didn’t hurt them a bit. Some things are accumulative, like cigarettes and people, one cigarette or one pack , you feel fine….but they are killing you. Some things are just a slower death. Again thank you for sharing.

  15. I’m happy for your good outcome. could have been much worse.

I have seen so many people on here asking should they treat their own pets, if people cannot afford the vet bills they should not have pets. I have insured both my cats, it costs £21 a month but that gives me peace of mind that if they are sick I can take them to a vet without having to worry about a big bill. Insure your pets and you won’t be landed with a huge bill and your animals can get the proper treatment they deserve.
