Sharjah is one of the emirates of United Arab Emirates, claiming to hold a proud history spanning for more than 5000 years. Things to see and do in Sharjah are plenty. You can start by browsing its numerous museums capturing the emirate’s culture, history and heritage. Or step into a bustling souq, a traditional Arabian market, and hunt for souvenirs amidst a sea of bubbly locals and tourists.
Among its top tourist attractions remains Sharjah’s Arabian Wildlife Centre. The centre was launched initially to sustain a programme of Arabian Leopard breeding. Today it has further expanded into a fine research facility that breeds and protects diverse species of animals, native to the Arabian Peninsula.
Arabian Wildlife Centre is sited only a few minutes drive from Sharjah city centre, where you can browse Arabian fauna, of the past and the present. It is also near the famous Sharjah Natural History Museum and Desert Park.
At the Arabian Wildlife Centre you will see animals from mammals to reptiles, insects to amphibians, freshwater fish as well as invertebrates. The Arabian Wildlife Centre also breeds small desert cats. They include the Caracal with tall pointy ears, the fluffy Wild Cat that resembles your pet cat in addition to the Sand Cat with small stature and triangular face.
When you visit the habitats of the reptiles, insects and fish, be ready to meet the venomous adder, glaring monitor lizard, crawling camel spider and formidable scorpion. At the wadi you will capture plenty of peaceful and reviving sights, where the aviary rests. A wadi in Arabian means a dried riverbed or a valley. Here you can spot a host of bird species including Houbara Bustard, Indian Roller, flamingo and numerous songbirds.
During your tour do not forget to look for the spying Rock Hyrax who is also known as Rock Rabbit. They are a rodent-like species said to be the kin of the mammalian giants, the elephant. The wadi also nestles a cave where you will find a shoal of blind cave fish swimming about in a tank.
A tour at the Arabian Wildlife Centre will let you experience and learn a world of things about diverse animals and their natural habitats. You can spend your vacation at a hotel in Sharjah UAE such as Millennium Hotel Sharjah and visit this zoological attraction. Suited for both business and leisure travellers, this luxury accommodation sits near the city centre as well as some of the best tourist attractions in Sharjah.
